You stick your face into the bucket, holding your head under the water.
You breathe in deeply, sampling the rich liquid of the water, noticing
how it lacks the air-like qualities you’re used to. Soon, though,
you stop doing this. In fact, you stop doing everything. This is because
you are dead.
The next thing you know, you are standing
on a cloud. The sky is blue, and everything around you feels absolutely
perfect. There’s an office building in front of you. You open
the door and head inside.
There’s no receptionist at the front
desk, but as you enter the lobby the elevator door opens invitingly.
You shrug and step in, pushing the button to a random floor.
When the doors open again, you step out to
find yourself amidst row after row of cubicles. You walk over to the
nearest one.
“Um, excuse me,” you say to the
small, spectacled man sitting at a desk.
He looks up at you and grins. “Hey,”
he says, “you new around here? Name’s Steve. Welcome to
Heaven.”
“Hi Steve. I was hoping to talk with
God.”
Steve does his best to suppress a laugh.
“Sorry son, but there is no God. No, the world is really run by
this office. I mean, you didn’t really think that one guy could
possibly look after all the life in the Universe by himself, did you?”
“People’s lives are run by an
office building?” you ask, still not fully grasping the idea.
“Absolutely. This here is the Department
of Altering Manifest Destiny.”
As you mull this information over in your
head, you find that you are incredibly disappointed with the afterlife.
And more specifically, you are disappointed with Steve. The first person
you meet, and he’s some weasely little businessman.
• Do
you continue talking to Steve?
• Do you kill Steve?
